Brian Chapman (OCG 1961)
John Brian (known as Brian) Chapman entered Carey in year 7 in 1956. His peer year is 1961.
Subsequently he studied science at Monash University, majoring in physiology, and gaining his PhD in 1970. His doctoral thesis is entitled: Miothermic Investigations of Muscle Contraction.
His post-doctoral work on muscle energetics and vectional metabolism led to pioneering the use of mechanistic computer simulation for studying problems in theoretical physiology.
During his career he submitted some 30 research papers, culminating in the application of computer simulation to the development of highly interactive software for computer-based learning. He was an associate professor at Monash University from 2008-2013, after which he (officially) retired. This proved to be a short-lived hiatus, however, and he is frequently called upon as a consultant.
Brian was an outstanding pianist from a young age, and he has appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras throughout Australia and abroad. He currently directs a comprehensive musical festival in regional Victoria and has collaborated with prominent musicians. A program from a recent concert is appended herewith.
Brian is a humble man who decries his academic, business and musical triumphs while bemoaning his lack of success at cricket. His best performance (about which he was uncharacteristically proud) was a top score of 12 not out, of which – as he explained - 11 runs were scored in singles.
Brian is married to Lucy (herself a talented artist and poet), and they have three adult children.
