Barry Merton
Establishing shots: Frequently ambushed, mugged and kidnapped by zealous film-makers, Bazza himself cuts a dashing figure or harried victim in student productions. He supervises the frequent shooting of Mr Cramer, whose study and outside staircase are festooned with cameras, tripods and cables. Even exam papers are coloured by Barry's whimsical humour: 'With great presence of mind, Miss Anthrope grabs the nearest blancmange mould, which is fortunately full of chocolate blancmange, and she empties it over the burglar's head...' Barry is commended in the Victorian Fellowship of Australian Writers' Short Story Award for 'A Tooth and Nail', a humourous tale about a bishop set in Africa.
Flashback to 1971: Barry Merton, Director of M. K. & M. Pictures, is invited by Gerard Cramer to make a documentary to commemorate the School's fiftieth anniversary. Training a group of senior students in filmmaking, he produces 'Carey Is', a 35- minute colour film that is premiered three years later.
Cut to 1972: After setting up the Audio Visual Department, Barry initiates intermediate classes in filmmaking. Two years later, with Brian Keyte, he pioneers one of the first Leaving Certificate courses in Film Study in Victoria. In the nineties he implements the V.C.E. Media course. Using his experience of making educational films and audio visuals with the Rank Organization in London, he helps several students to break into the media industry.
Fast forward to 1978: Barry serves on the Carey Co-Education Committee. Mindful of his own boys' school education and his struggle into middle age to understand the opposite sex, he shows dedication to the cause by writing reports, reading speeches, attending countless meetings.
Zip pan to the future: Barry continues to work on scripts and submissions for Trifilm Production (formerly M. K. & M. Pictures). In his filmography, he is credited with over 40 documentary films in Australia and overseas. Locations include Africa, Vietnam and Malta, where his script for the six-part SBS series 'The Maltese Connection' was directed by Old Carey Grammarian Tim Smart.
Parallel action: With his wife, Meg, he runs a thriving bed and breakfast business at Shoreham. Having graduated from rowing coach at Carey to Commercial Steamboat Operator, he skippers cruises off Sorrento in his steam launch 'Honeysuckle', making lots of smoke and whistling into the sunset.
Closing credits: Barry Merton will be fondly remembered as an innovator in several areas of school life, such as his presentations at Film and Drama Nights and tutorials in Moore House, as a witty conversationalist and raconteur of avuncular charm, and as a highly esteemed practitioner in the art of film and television production.
