Robinson River
The Robinson River (Rob River) exchange rekindled Carey's efforts at establishing long-term relationships with First Nations people. Sue Ramsey will be remembered, in particular, for this initiative, and she nominated it as her most significant achievement in education. At the time, in the early 2000s, Australia's unmet need to create a genuine culture of reconciliation and understanding was startling, Sue Ramsey forged a connection with the Robinson River School through its principal Helen Webber. Robinson River in the Northern Territory served the tiny and remote community of around 200 people which established itself there in 1985. Situated 100 kilometres south of the Gulf of Carpentaria near the border with Queensland, Robinson River is a two-day drive from Darwin or a four-hour flight from Alice Springs. The community's residents were employed at a large cattle farm, the school and in welding shops that made gates, fencing and other products, and the community had its own orchard and a large number of chickens. The school educated students from Prep to Year 9.
