Noel Mewton-Wood (OCG 1935)
Noel Mewton-Wood‘s school registration number was 480. The original School roll records his parents as F. W. M. Wood, Technical School Officer of ‘Clyde’ Oxley Road Hawthorn. At his School commencement, it records his mother as Mrs Mewton-Wood of 42 Grove Road Hawthorn of Church of England Denomination.
Noel was born on 20th November 1922 and was aged seven upon entering Carey in Form I. His leaving form was V. The Preparatory School Play in 1932 was Sir James Barrie’s “Peter Pan”; Noel had the part of Mrs Darling.
The same year two contributions were published by him in the School Magazine, The Carey Chronicle.
Two of the Prep Staff took boys in Noel's form to the National Museum for an excursion. It is recorded some of them seemed to have a nightmare which Noel described vividly in his composition examination.
At Carey’s 10th Annual Speech Night in December 1932, held in the Hawthorn Town Hall, he received a Merit Prize, no doubt in recognition of his acting and writing.
In 1933 he moved into the Senior School. During his final year 1934 his contribution to the Carey Chronicle, “A Night In Bed” was published.
In the Carey Chronicle of 1941 a report of Noel Mewton-Wood playing with Dr Malcolm Sargent.
By 1943 in the January edition of the Carey Chronicle further reports of Noel playing at Albert Hall in London. The August edition of the Carey Chronicle reports that Noel Mewton-Wood was playing as solo pianist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Noel Mewton-Wood was not a student of the piano at Carey, tuition being in the hands of his mother and Conservatorium of Music at The University of Melbourne. At the Thirteenth Annual Speech Night on 18th December 1935, Headmaster H.G. Steele made this comment, “Noel Mewton-Wood, who was with us last year, has capped a successful year in music by winning the Exhibition for the highest marks in Victoria in Grade I Practical”.
Guest musician at Carey’s Fourteenth Speech Night again the Hawthorn Town Hall, in December was Noel Mewton-Wood. It was reported that, “the talented pianist’s presentation was delightful”.
