Reverend Ivan Poole (OCG 1955)
Ivan Poole attended Carey from 1953 to 1955, where he was a Prefect and a talented all-round sportsman. After graduating from the University of Melbourne with an Arts degree, he spent several years overseas studying, playing sport and entering the Methodist ministry, including time in the United States.
Returning to Australia in 1966, Ivan began teaching and soon realised education was his true vocation. He joined the Carey staff in 1969 and served the School for the next 29 years in an extraordinary range of roles, including teacher of Religious Education, History and English; School Counsellor; Registrar; Senior Chaplain; and President of the Old Carey Grammarians’ Association.
A passionate cricketer, Ivan was a founding member of the Old Carey Cricket Club and coached both the Boys’ and Girls’ First XI teams with great success. He was also a devoted supporter of Outdoor Education, a keen chorister, and a much-loved leader of countless school tours.
Renowned for his warmth, wisdom and absolute integrity, Ivan influenced generations of students and staff.
