Time Capsule Prepared by Form 8 Classes in 1982
This collection contains items from a time capsule buried in 1982 to mark Carey Baptist Grammar School’s 60th year, and unearthed in 2023 as part of the School’s centenary celebrations. The plaque states:
Description‘IMPLANTED NEAR THIS POINT IS A TIME CAPSULE PREPARED BY FORM 8 CLASSES IN 1982’, and on the reverse: ‘CAPSULE LOCATED BEHIND FALSE WALL OF LANDING TO THE RIGHT OF THIS PLAQUE’.
This collection comprises the contents of a steel time capsule assembled in 1982 by the Year 8 cohort of Carey Baptist Grammar School, with the intention of commemorating the School’s centenary in 2023. Initiated by Form 8 Co-ordinator and teacher Andrew Greenwood, the project aimed to capture a “snapshot of the period” from the students' perspectives. The time capsule was buried in a wall on the Kew campus and remained undiscovered for over four decades until its rediscovery and unearthing in 2023, prompted by alumnus John Edmonds, who contacted the School’s Community Engagement team.
Items in the capsule were contributed by students from the entire Year 8 level and curated by John Edmonds and Rohan Silver. The capsule contains student memorabilia, documents, and artefacts reflective of school life and broader social culture in the early 1980s. It serves as a unique record of student voice, school spirit and daily life during Carey’s 58th year.
