On Saturday 5 May 1962, the new extensions to our science laboratories were officially opened by Dr. F. W. G. White, C.B.E., Chairman of CSIRO. The new buildings featured striking architecture and connected the Senior School Block with the Middle School. They set a new standard for classroom and lab design, and similar updates for history and social studies classrooms were also close to completion at the front of the Middle School.
Upstairs, the new facilities included the physics labs, a geography room, and a senior science lab for advanced student research. The physics area had an office, an optics lab, an electronics workshop, and several storage rooms. The geography room was fully equipped for showing sound films and included a preparation room and teacher office.
On the ground floor, there was a large junior craft room for art, craft, and woodwork, along with two form rooms. In the main science block, the old upstairs geography room had been converted into a chemistry lecture theatre and office, while the downstairs physics lab became a laboratory techniques workshop.
These improvements to the school’s teaching spaces were made possible in part by a grant from the Industrial Fund for the Advancement of Scientific Education in Schools. We wanted to express our sincere thanks to the fund’s organizers for their generous support.
