The Carey Chronicle
The Carey Chronicle is the official school magazine of Carey Baptist Grammar School, first published in 1923. Produced annually, with some years seeing multiple issues, it has been published continuously for more than a century, making it the school’s longest-running publication.
The Chronicle provides a comprehensive record of school life, capturing the academic, cultural, sporting and social activities of each year. Typical content includes reports from the Principal and School Council, updates from Houses and year levels, coverage of co-curricular programs, staff news and achievements of current students and alumni. The magazine also preserves creative contributions from students such as essays, poems and artworks, offering insight into the voices and experiences of each generation.
Beyond documenting school events, the Carey Chronicle serves as a valuable social and historical record of the changing character of Carey and its community. From its earliest editions, which reflected the experiences of a small boys’ school in suburban Melbourne, to its more recent volumes chronicling a large, co-educational, internationally-minded school, the publication mirrors the evolution of Carey’s identity, values and place in society.
The collection includes bound and individual issues of the Chronicle from 1923 to the present day. Together, they form an unbroken narrative of Carey’s history, providing an indispensable resource for researchers, alumni, staff and students alike.
