Howard James Jenkin (OCG 1924)
Howard Jenkin was one of Carey’s Foundation Scholars. During his two years as a student and throughout his subsequent decades of service, he left an enduring mark on almost every aspect of the School as it exists today.
Howard was number 38 on the Roll when Carey opened in 1923 and served as a Prefect in both 1923 and 1924. In each of those years he was a member of the First XI and First XVIII, and he became the inaugural Captain of Moore House when the House system was introduced in 1924. That same year, he was awarded the Henry Meeks Gold Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Athletics. He was also a prolific contributor to The Chronicle and designed the School’s Sports Colours scheme.
Howard was present at the meeting held at Stuart Hickman’s home on 10 July 1925 at which the Old Carey Grammarians’ Association was formed. He was appointed its first Secretary/Treasurer, a position he held for five years. He later served as President of the OCGA. in 1936 and 1937 and was elected an honoured Life Member in 1960.
His service to Carey continued through his membership of the School Council from 1940 to 1942 and again from 1947 to 1969, including a decade as Honorary Secretary from 1949 to 1959. In 1969 he was appointed an Honorary Life Member of the School Council.
Howard Jenkin’s contribution to Carey was exceptional and sustained. He is remembered with great respect and gratitude by all members of the Carey community, and sincere sympathy is extended to his family.
