Harry Clarke (Staff, 1973–2017)
Harry Clarke dedicated 45 years of service to Carey, approaching each day with the same energy, warmth and humour as his first. Known for his cheeky one-liners and bright demeanour, Harry ensured that everyone around him never took themselves too seriously.
Teaching and Leadership
Harry’s career began in Physical Education, where he was recognised for his patience, humour and commitment to helping students reach their full potential. He continued to develop professionally through ongoing training and courses, ultimately becoming Head of Physical Education. In this role, he contributed significantly to the design of the Cramer Physical Education Centre and the development of the Geoffrey Stevens Swimming Pool, shaping outstanding facilities for the Carey community.
House System and Mentorship
As Head of Moore House, Harry’s natural, caring approach made him a valued mentor. Students described him as “a supportive and vibrant role model” and “more than just a teacher, but also a friend.” His relationships with students endured beyond their school years, with reunions and social gatherings reflecting the lasting impact of his guidance and friendship.
Sporting Contributions
Despite being vertically challenged, Harry was an elite basketballer and a driving force in Carey’s basketball program. He served as Staff Member in Charge of Basketball, coached Boys and Girls First teams, and later managed the Girls First team, mentoring players and instilling a love for the game. His leadership contributed to Carey’s success in the APS competitions. Harry also played a key role in athletics, nearly leading Carey to its second APS premiership in the mid-1980s. He was known for inspiring students to perform at their best under pressure.
Support of Staff and Community
Harry supported colleagues across the school, offering guidance, advocacy, and mentorship, particularly in IT and computing. He was a frequent presence in Junior School staffrooms and contributed to the professional development of many early-career teachers. His commitment extended to the Staff Association, where he served in numerous roles, committees, and social initiatives, earning Life Membership in recognition of his dedication.
Legacy
Harry Clarke exemplified honesty, commitment, and care for students and colleagues alike. His service, spanning nearly half a century, left an indelible mark on the Carey community. He is remembered with great affection by students, parents, and staff alike, and his influence continues through the many lives he touched.
