Clara Victoria Hickman, affectionately known as Clare, was born in Penguin, Tasmania, on 22 January 1901. She was the wife of Carey's third Headmaster, Mr Stuart Hickman. 

Clare trained and graduated as a preschool teacher in Hobart, where she later married Stuart Hickman in 1925.

Clare and Stuart shared a strong commitment to their faith community, coming from families with longstanding connections to the Methodist Church. Following their marriage, they established their home in Melbourne and became involved with Burke Road Methodist Church, which became an important part of their family and community life.

Throughout her life, Clare was a devoted supporter and partner to Stuart, providing encouragement and stability during his many years of service to Carey. Stuart’s commitment to the School was extensive; during his time at Carey he served in many capacities, including as a teacher, Housemaster, librarian, athletics coach and editor of the Carey Chronicle. Clare supported him throughout these years, helping to create a strong and welcoming home environment amid the demands of his work.

While Stuart’s contributions to Carey were widely recognised, Clare’s influence was found through her quiet dedication as a wife, companion and encourager. She shared in the challenges and achievements of their family life and provided the support that enabled Stuart to contribute so significantly to the School community.

Their early family life was marked by personal tragedy with the loss of their first child, Avril, who died from meningitis in 1931.

Clare died in Melbourne on 20 December 1993. Her life reflects the important but often less visible contribution made by the partners and families who supported those who helped shape the Carey community.
