Bruce Murray OAM (OCG 1960)
Bruce Murray attended Carey from 1949 to 1961, distinguishing himself as School Captain, Captain of Tranter, President of the Students’ Representative Council, and Dux of Humanities (aeq.). He also represented the School in football, cricket, and athletics, demonstrating both leadership and sporting talent from an early age.
After completing a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Melbourne, Bruce worked as an accountant and in various other roles before returning to Carey in 1973 as a teacher of Accounting. True to his character, he quickly immersed himself in school life, coaching Football, Cricket, and Cross Country, inspiring generations of students along the way.
In 1978, Bruce was appointed Head of Moore House, and in 1993 he became School Registrar. His commitment to the school continued through senior leadership roles, including Director of Community Relations and Director of Alumni Relations, where he strengthened connections across the Carey community.
Bruce’s dedication has been recognised widely. He is an Honoured Life Member of the OCGA, a past Chair of the Carey Medal Committee, and an inaugural member and past Chair of the Heritage Committee. In 2022, he was awarded the Carey Medal, and in 2024 he received an Order of Australia Medal in the Australia Day Honours List, “for service to secondary education, and to the community.”
