Lindsay Newnham (OCG 1938)
Lindsay Newnham (OCG 1938) was School Captain and Dux of Carey Baptist Grammar School in both 1937 and 1938, an exceptional achievement reflecting his outstanding academic ability and leadership. He went on to a distinguished career at Wesley College, where he taught Ancient Greek, Roman History and Latin for 39 years, inspiring a lifelong curiosity in many of his students.
A respected scholar and historian, Newnham also wrote several local and church histories, including Talking About Books: The First 50 Years of the Ivanhoe Reading Circle 1920–1969 (1970), This Corner: The First Fifty Years of the Ivanhoe Baptist Church 1911–1961, and Writing a Local Church History (Victorian Baptist Historical Society, 1993). Remembered as a rigorous and deeply knowledgeable classicist, he devoted his life to scholarship, education and historical research.
