Reverend William Montague Cartwright
Reverend William Montague Cartwright was born in England in 1878 and died in Australia in May 1928.
Rev Cartwright emigrated to Australia at an early age and graduated from the Baptist Theological College in Melbourne. Upon ordination as a Minister he became the Pastor at George Street Fitzroy Church from 1910 to 1915.
In October 1915 he took over as Minister of the Kew Church. It was an outstanding ministry at Kew, particularly in the welfare of the younger generation. All areas within the Church displayed great regret at his departure and very warm appreciation for all his work. In 1920 Mr Cartwright was appointed Superintendent of the Victorian Home Missions until he transferred to the Brunswick Church in 1923.
From this date until his death in 1928 is the period during which he made his great outstanding contribution to Carey and its successful progress during the first five years of its existence.
Concluding a strenuous year as President of the Baptist Union of Victoria, he proceeded to organise and conduct the Carey £10,000 Appeal Fund. That is $20,000, and it may appear to you that $20,000 is not very much of an amount. Today that is so, but when you consider that that was the amount paid for Laycock House, and Carey's first Preparatory School including Raymond Hall, you will realise that it was no small task for Rev. Cartwright.
His remarkable energy, by personal canvas raised £11,212.00, slightly in excess of $22,000.
Mr Cartwright was also a member of the School Council 1924-27.
Mr Cartwright's judgement was always of value, his enthusiasm for the School a constant encouragement and his generous services a challenge to those who were associated with Carey.
