Gadsden Gymnasium
In 1954, Mr Stanley W. Gadsden donated 5000 pounds to build a new gymnasium.
The Gadsden Gymnasium was officially opened on Saturday 4 June 1955. At the time it was one of the finest and best equipped gymnasiums of its kind. The Australian gymnastic team trained for the Melbourne Olympic Games in the Gymnasium in 1956.
The Gym is described in the Carey Chronicle July 1955 as ‘having a pavilion which commands an excellent view of the oval and surrounding neighbourhood, as well as a particularly good, well lit craft room…built to cater for woodwork and a wide variety of other crafts.’
As part of the ‘Greater Carey’ fundraising campaign this facility was funded through the generosity of Mr Stanley W. Gadsden. Other major developments at the School at this time were achieved by another fundraising campaign known as ‘Towards a Greater Carey’ and included the building of the Memorial Great Hall, new classrooms for Middle School, the addition of a second storey to the Science block and the construction of a Junior School oval.
The Gymnasium in Building K and C the old Science block were demolished to make way for the new Centre for Learning and Innovation. ‘The new Centre will provide a new Information Resource Centre, Carey Archives, facilities for Humanities, Science and International Studies, and forges new connections with the Quadrangle and Chapel the social and spiritual centres of the campus'.
