Philip Grutzner
Philip Grutzner (BForSci, DipEd, MBA, MACE) served as the seventh Principal of Carey Baptist Grammar School from Term 2, 2010 until the end of 2019. During his decade of leadership, he oversaw a significant programme of innovation, strategic development and campus improvement, strengthening Carey's position as one of Australia's leading independent schools.
A Victorian by birth, Philip was educated at Beaumaris North Primary School and Melbourne Grammar School before graduating from the University of Melbourne. He began his teaching career at Camberwell Grammar School in 1987, teaching Biology, Mathematics and Science, while also serving as a sports coach, House Tutor and Head of House. During this period, he completed a teaching exchange at Manchester Grammar School in the United Kingdom and earned a Master of Business Administration from RMIT.
Before joining Carey, Philip served as Headmaster of Braemar College in Victoria (1997–2004), where he led major strategic planning, campus development, enrolment growth and advances in academic and co-curricular programmes. He then became Headmaster of St Peter's College, Adelaide, where he implemented significant reforms in curriculum, pastoral care, global engagement, organisational structure and capital development.
Throughout his career, Philip has held numerous leadership positions within the independent school sector, including roles with the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia, the Association of Ecumenical Schools of Victoria, St Mark's College, Adelaide, and the Ethics Committee of St Andrew's Hospital. In 2003 he completed the Principals' Leadership Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
At Carey, Philip championed innovation in teaching and learning while guiding the School through an important period of growth and renewal. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, the Centre for Learning and Innovation (CLI) was named The Grutzner Centre for Learning and Innovation in his honour.
Philip concluded his tenure at Carey at the end of 2019 to become Principal of Melbourne Grammar School, returning to lead his alma mater.
