David Kingsley Powers
Flight Sergeant David Kingsley Powers was killed in air operations over Stettin, Germany on 30th August, 1944.
Born in Kew, David was the son of Frank and Myrtle Gwendoline (née Field). He started school at Carey before moving to Scotch College where he completed his schooling, leaving at the end of 1940.
He joined the Bank of New South Wales and on turning 18 in 1942, he joined the R.A.A.F. He trained as a Wireless Operator before being posted to Bomber Command in England in September, 1943.
Serving with 166 Sqn.(RAF), flying Lancasters, he and the rest of the crew died in a bombing raid over Stettin, the coastal city in eastern Germany on the Baltic Sea. He was, by then, a Flight Sergeant and had just turned 20, part of the crew of AS-S. The experienced pilot was only 22 and the rest younger.
He is also commemorated by the Kew City Roll of Honour Memorial.
