Original hand bell that was used for the first time on the morning of Tuesday 13 February 1923) to summon the Foundation Scholars to the first school assembly. Bell first rung by student, Arthur Locke.

The hand bell is the type used by a town crier. This bell was superseded at the commencement of first term 1929 by a much larger bell, in a fixed position. This smaller bell was handed over to the Preparatory School.

Apart from summoning students to assembly, classes and releasing them to recess, lunch hour and end of the school, it had other uses. Signalling the quarters in football matches, the last lap of distance athletics events, attracting patrons to a fete sideshow, and anything required of it for the good order and discipline of the School.
