Throughout Vernon's 11 years at Carey (1926-36) he entered fully into the life of the School.
He is one of only a few past students who have received both the Junior and Senior Henry Meeks Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Co-curricular Activities and was School Captain in 1935 and 1936.
His contribution to football, cricket, athletics and swimming as a student and his service as a Trustee of the MCG and the Australian Gallery of Sport indicated his love of sport.
Vernon was a barrister and partner with Hall and Wilcox until he entered State Parliament in 1956. From that time until 1976 he was to hold various Ministries including Transport and Attorney General.
He was a member of the School Board (1963-1970) and President of the O C G A (1949-50).
During the Second World War, Vernon was in the CMF, RAN and RANVR and held the rank of Lieutenant.
Vernon's three brothers, three sons and three of his grandsons all attended Carey and his father made significant contributions in the early years of Carey.
