Minutes of the Executive Committee of the School Council, held at the School, Thursday, October 8, 1925, at 8pm reported:

The Treasurer reported the gift of a Smith-Premier typewriter from Mr W. M. Holmes.

Mr Holmes was a member of the School Council for some years and a great friend of Carey.

Statement of significanceCarey's first typewriter.

No. 10 Smith Premier Typewriter with upper and lower case keys. Carey's first typewriter: documents regarding the history of the Smith-Premier typewriter was a gift from Mr W M Holmes - a member of the first Carey School Council in 1925.

The first at Carey was presented by Mr W. M. Holmes, the School Property Officer. On this machine Miss Hall occasionally typed the Council minutes and, less frequently, letters for the Headmaster. In the first years, Steele was his own secretary, conducting all his correspondence by hand.
