Robert Rosen
Robert Rosen was a teacher in the Carey Junior School for nineteen years between 1967 and 1985. At
Carey he taught music, some language studies and had a grade. His work was in the (Old) Junior School at
Kew.
He recently retired as lecturer or orchestral conducting at the Victoria College of the Arts. He studied
conducting in his home country in Europe and has conducted professionally all around Australia the ABC
symphony orchestras as well as opera productions with companies including the Australian Opera.
He also taught many young conductors at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, and
the Defence Force School of Music (Australia). He taught conducting to the past Carey Director of Music, Roland
Yeung. He taught conducting to many of Australia's current conductors. He had the special skill of being
able to unlock the secrets of conducting Classical music.
Robert was a skilled pianist, able to read full conductors scores on the piano and play the standard works for
pianoforte. He was a superb coach and teacher.
The Carey Junior School Choir was his pride. The performances were exciting yet anyone who wanted to be
in this choir was welcome. This was unusual as choirs usually only had selected voices. Several current staff
members were members of this choir and fondly remember this experience. There are several former staff
members of Carey who fondly remembers his fun and antics.
Carey Music Association already has a Music Scholarship named after him. It recognises his contribution to
music in Australia and sharing his love of music with students at Carey.
He passed away on Monday 26th June 2000.
