Florence Hazel Thatcher
Florence Hazel Thatcher left a senior role at a large company to become Carey’s Bursar in 1947, a position she held until her retirement in 1966.
During her tenure, the student population grew from 400 to 1,200 boys, with staff numbers rising to over 100. This rapid expansion brought significant financial demands, which she helped manage with skill and determination.
Working closely with the School Council, she oversaw budgets and financial operations with energy, diligence, and a strong sense of responsibility.
She was generally well liked by the students. Though student discipline wasn’t formally part of her role, she had little tolerance for misbehaviour and was known to deliver stern reprimands when necessary - earning her the affectionate nickname ‘Crusty.’
A founding member of the Bursars’ Association, she was later honoured with Life Membership.
Florence Thatcher passed away in February 2000. A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance was held in the William Carey Chapel, and in accordance with her long-standing wish, her ashes were scattered in the garden outside her former office.
