Statement of significanceThis portrait sitters' chair, crafted from Huon Pine, was used by Archibald Prize-winning artist and Carey parent Ernest Buckmaster (1897–1968) during his portrait sessions.
Buckmaster’s sitters, including notable figures, would have occupied this chair as he painted their likenesses. The School commissioned Buckmaster to paint Carey's earlier headmasters. The chair can be seen in Buckmaster’s portrait of Mr. Stuart Hickman, Carey Headmaster (1948–1964), displayed in the Memorial Great Hall.
Donated by the Buckmaster family in 2024, this piece offers a unique connection to Buckmaster’s artistic legacy and Carey’s history.TypeFurnitureMaterialsWood
