HG Steele Collection
The HG Steele Collection comprises documents, photographs and memorabilia relating to Harold George Steele, the foundation Headmaster of Carey Baptist Grammar School (1923–1944). The collection highlights Steele’s leadership in the establishment and early development of the school, including administrative records, correspondence, speeches, reports and materials illustrating school life and culture during his tenure.
As Carey’s founding Headmaster, Steele played a pivotal role in shaping the school’s educational philosophy, governance and community identity. The collection provides insight into the formative years of Carey, the challenges of establishing a private school in Melbourne in the early 20th century and Steele’s enduring influence on the institution’s heritage.
The materials were gathered from school archives, donations from Steele’s family, and former staff and students associated with his tenure.
