2024 Carey Artist-in-Residence Program: Tai Snaith
About the Program
As part of the project, students explored books of personal significance and developed new visual narratives using an open page from their chosen text, alongside found materials and ceramic elements created during a series of workshops led by Snaith.
The project was inspired by Snaith's Open Book initiative, originally commissioned by the State Library of Victoria. In response, the school sought to present the student works at scale within the campus. With support from Carey Art Technician Simon De Boer, the works were reproduced as banners in the colours of the School Houses and installed temporarily in the JOT Quad.
The JOT Quad, as a central gathering space for learning and collaboration, provides a fitting context for the display, reflecting the shared creative process underpinning the project.
About the Artist
Tai Snaith is an artist, author, illustrator and broadcaster living on Wurundjeri Country. Her artwork celebrates the intersection of stories, collections, people and place.
Her multidisciplinary practice explores assemblage, storytelling and metaphor through engaging with the aesthetic and poetic possibilities of found objects, ceramics and photography. A range of ceramic hand-building techniques and processes have been introduced and developed through her collaborative work with students and participants in workshops over time.
