Totems, 1995
Totems was a large multi-part collaborative artwork completed at the Donvale campus in 1995 following a year-long community project involving students, staff and parents. Designed to enhance the outdoor learning environment, the installation combined sculptural, landscape and functional elements to create a shaded and reflective gathering space connected to the campus Poetry Path.
The work featured tall carved clay totems inspired by native flora and fauna, which also served to visually integrate and camouflage the poles supporting overhead canvas shade sails. Large planter cylinders marked each corner of the site, while the four Donvale Houses were represented within the design. Rustic-toned asphalt paving and seating areas contributed to the creation of a calm and welcoming communal space.
The project formed part of a broader staged landscape and art initiative aimed at integrating creativity, environment and community within the Donvale campus.
