This picture book was created by Year 4 students at Carey Donvale in 2012 to celebrate the Year of the Water Dragon, a significant event in the Chinese zodiac that occurs only once every 60 years.

Developed during the National Year of Reading, the project began as a creative storytelling exercise inspired by Jackie Morris’s beautifully illustrated and poetic book Tell Me a Dragon. Students were encouraged to imagine and describe their own dragons, drawing on the wonder, symbolism and mythology associated with these legendary creatures.

The project was a collaboration between the Art, Library and LOTE departments, which worked together to create a learning experience that was both linguistically inclusive and visually rich. Through writing, illustration and cultural exploration, students developed imaginative narratives while engaging with an important aspect of Chinese culture.

The resulting book showcases the creativity of the Year 4 cohort and reflects Carey Donvale’s commitment to collaborative, cross-curricular learning.
