Mollie Brown
The death of former Prep School teacher and Deputy Head Mollie Brown (staff 1955-76) marked the close of a chapter of Carey's history. Mollie taught at the School for 22 years and retired in 1976.
Mollie was remembered fondly as a great personality, loud and breezy, her speaking voice resonant with rounded vowels. She always called the boys in her class her 'gentlemen' and conveyed to them something of her own love of literature.
The old Prep School library was named in her honour and, since it no longer exists in its old form, part of the new Junior School carried her name.
At her funeral it was said of Mollie that 'her life was a long one, full of interest and achievement. Even in declining health she still loved people. She will be sadly missed by those who knew her.'
