Carey Chronic
Published between 1964 and 1968, Carey Chronic was a satirical student magazine created by students, for students at Carey Baptist Grammar School. The title was a deliberate play on words—Carey Chronicle is the name of the school’s official annual magazine and Carey Chronic offered a cheeky, irreverent counterpoint.
With its tongue firmly in cheek, Carey Chronic featured humorous takes on school life, mock reports, satirical articles, cartoons and parodies of teachers, assemblies and broader cultural trends of the 1960s. It was bold, witty and often pushed the boundaries of what was considered appropriate in a school setting.
Though short-lived, the magazine gave students a creative outlet and a voice during a time of cultural change. Occasionally courting controversy, it reflected a growing spirit of independence and satire within the student body. Carey Chronic remains a distinctive and colourful part of Carey’s history—remembered for its humour, originality and playful challenge to tradition.
