DESCRIPTION

DescriptionThe grand openings of both the hall and the gymnasium in 1955 were exhilarating
days for the entire school community. Not since the building of Laycock House and
Raymond Hall in the 1920s had the school landscape altered so dramatically. The
state-of-the-art gymnasium prompted the flourishing of gymnastics as a school sport
and incorporated the old building that had been used as a tuckshop and changing
rooms. Above the new building sat a pavilion overlooking the oval and a craft room
for woodwork and similar activities. Olympic fever engulfed the school in 1956
because the Olympic Games were staged in Melbourne in that year. Students at
Carey looked forward keenly to the prospect. They enjoyed ringside seats during the
Victorian and Australian gymnastics teams’ preparations which took place in Carey’s
gymnasium, and these events prompted even greater interest in gymnastics among
