Tony McCutcheon (OCG 1951)
Tony McCutcheon’s connection with Carey began in 1942, when, at the age of eight, he entered the Junior School - at that time staffed entirely by women.
The following year he was both Captain of the Junior School and Dux. In 1944, having moved into the Senior School (then staffed entirely by men), he took part in Carey’s 21st birthday celebrations at the Hawthorn Town Hall and even helped dig wartime trenches on the school grounds.
Tony immersed himself fully in school life. He represented Carey in swimming and football, and was also a member of the school’s own Scout troop, the 7th Kew Scout Group.
His leadership qualities were recognised early. In 1950 he became Vice-Captain of the School and again achieved Dux. In his final year, 1951, he served as School Captain, was once more Dux, led the Scout Troop, captained the First XVIII football team, joined the Crusaders, and was awarded the Henry Meeks Gold Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Athletics.
As a university student, Tony returned to support the Carey Scout Troop in a leadership role.
Although much of his professional life was spent overseas, in 2014 Tony reconnected with Carey by joining the Carey Heritage Committee, where he continues to serve today.
