Bryan Marshall (OCG 1964)
Bryan Marshall was a student at Carey. He became a Prefect and a House Captain. Bryan received school colours in Football, Athletics and Gymnastics.
He was a member of the Carey staff and taught Phys. Ed. Both he, and his brother David, were judges of the Inter-House Gymnastics Competitions in the senior school. Bryan became Housemaster of Paton House in 1975.
At Camp Toonallook, Bryan planned and programmed the hiking routes for expeditions on Spermwhale Head and camping on 90 Mile Beach.
Bryan married Denise Johnson, having met Denise while they were both at Melbourne University. They have two children, Robert and Julie Anne.
In 1984, when I retired as Senior Master, and House Master of Marshman House in the Junior School, Bryan was appointed to take over from me as Senior Master. He retired from Carey in 1986.
Bryan became a farmer on his property at Wedderburn, where he bred merino sheep. He won the prize for the best fleece for six years. He was a member of the local CFA, and a lay preacher at Wedderburn and surrounding districts, and he assisted many farmers who were in stressful situations during that time.
Bryan suffered a heart attack, and then, on recovery, he took charge of the Wedderburn Tourist Park Reserve, which he carefully looked after for six years, welcoming many OCGA members as visitors.
He then went to Perth and planned a garden on his son’s winery in the Swan Valley. Bryan and Denise moved back to Paynesville, due to health problems, as Bryan had a rare cancer in his leg, which was inoperable.
By courage and faith, he lived a Christian life.
I know of no other staff member who influenced so many people, due to his courage and faith.
Let us remember him. A true heir of the Carey Community.
Bryan passed away on December 2nd, 2019, aged 73 years.
