Jack Hume Bird
Flight-Sergeant Jack Hume Bird was killed in an aircraft accident in Queensland on 20th March, 1944.
J. H. Bird was the second son of Councillor and Mrs. H. E. S. Bird, Mayor and Mayoress of Shepparton, and came to Carey as a boarder in February, 1933, from the Shepparton High School, remaining at the school till December, 1935, when he qualified for his Leaving Certificate.
He was a prefect and gained his colours in both football and tennis. On leaving Carey he continued his education at Queen's College, Melbourne University. A member of the Royal Melbourne Regiment for three years before the war, he joined the R.A.A.F. in 1940. He received his training as a bomber-pilot at Somers and Mallala (S. A.) , where he gained his wings. He is survived by a wife and son whose second birthday coincided with the date of his father's death. He was buried with full R.A.A.F. honours at Toowoomba, Queensland.
He was aged 27 years.
