The Gadsden brothers, Ron, Bruce, Noel and Lindsay attended Carey from late 1920s to early 1940s. Bruce, Noel and Lindsay played alongside one another in the 1940 football premiership team. Noel was a great athlete, swimmer and in his final year at school, prefect and vice-captain of Football and Athletics.
After leaving Carey, Noel enlisted in RAAF and sailed for England in 1943. On 13 August his plane failed to return to base after an attack on Brunswick in Germany. His death was confirmed a year later. He was 19 years of age.
The main pavilion at Bulleen is named after the family. Gadsden House is named after the Noel’s father, Stanley Gadsden. Stanley was a generous benefactor in the early days of the School.
