David Kitchen came to Carey in 1928, and spent six years at the school, leaving at the end of 1933. In that time he worked steadily and played vigorously, so that when he left he had matriculated, and had risen to be school prefect. On leaving school he joined his father in the firm of D. L. Kitchen Clothing Pty. Ltd., of which he was a director when he enlisted in the R.A.A.F. in 1940. Commended by Air Marshall Travis Harris, Commander in Chief (CIC )and Mr Winston Churchill (PM) for his skill in nursing home his crippled aircraft from Bostock in 1942. 460 squadron.
He took part in mass raids on Mannaheim, St Nazaire, Cologne and Essen. Posted as missing after a raid in Emden in June 1942.
He was 27 years old.
