Frank Walter Knight (OCG 1928)
F. W. Knight, son of Mrs Knight, of Byron Street, Brighton, and the late F. W. Knight, entered Carey on February 1927 and gained his Intermediate Certificate in December of that year, and left during the second term of 1928.
He then joined the staff of the State Savings Bank and remained in that service until he enlisted in the A.I.F. in June 1940, in a Survey Section. He continued his education after he left school and completed his degree of Bachelor of Commerce the week before he sailed, as a sergeant, for the Middle East, in 1941.
He took part in the Syrian campaign and enjoyed the friendship of Cristian missionaries in those parts.
He was transferred to the Pay Corps, and left in January 1942 with reinforcements, for Java, where he was made a prisoner of war. He was later transported to Burma for work on the Burma Road, but became very ill with malaria and other tropical complaints, and although, as all accounts agree, he put up a wonderful fight, he did not recover after the amputation of a leg.
He took a prominent part in Christian work, and was a deacon of the Brighton Baptist Church, and a lay preacher. He became engaged to Sister Phyllis Briggs, of the Alfred Hospital, before he left Australia.
He was aged 30 years.
