CreatorCarey Baptist Grammar SchoolDescriptionOn 6 April 1961, an historical event in the history of the School took place, when we held our first "Naming of Boats" ceremony. Mrs. L. E. Tranter christened the "Leonard Tranter," Mrs. W. H. J. Moore the "William Moore," Mrs. H. G. Steele the "Harold Steele," Mrs. S. L. Hickman the "Hedley Sutton," and Mrs. E. E. Dunshea the "Eric Dunshea," our first racing eight. In addition to a representation of boys and masters, the ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Hawthorn, the President of the Victorian Rowing Association, and a large battery of amateur, television and press photographers. Prayers for the occasion were prepared by the Chaplain, with the help of the Captain and Vice-Captain of Boats, J. C. G. Doery and C. D. M. Smeeton.
