Arthur Locke
Bertram ‘Arthur’ Locke was born on 13 January 1913.
At ten years of age, Arthur began his first day at Carey Baptist Grammar School in 1923 as a Foundation Scholar. He appears in the 1923 Foundation Staff and Students photograph.
At the School’s inaugural assembly, Headmaster H. G. Steele called for a volunteer to ring the bell. Arthur’s father, who was in attendance, suggested that his son take on the role—making Arthur the first student to ring the handbell to open a Carey assembly.
Arthur left Carey at the end of 1924 due to family circumstances. He later graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1936, and in 1939 purchased a pharmacy in Canterbury, which he owned until 1972. He continued to work part-time in pharmacy until his retirement in 1981.
In 1998, during Carey’s 75th Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Arthur took part in a re-enactment of the School’s first assembly. Standing on Sandell Oval before more than 1,700 students and staff, he once again rang the original handbell to call the School to order. Thirteen surviving Foundation Scholars were present that day, each responding “Present, Sir” as their names were read.
Although his time as a student was brief, Arthur remained closely connected to Carey throughout his life as an active member of the Old Carey Grammarians Association. His family has maintained strong ties to the School across multiple generations.
