It was painted by Walter Magilton, a respected local artist and former Carey student whose interest in the visual arts was nurtured by Evans during his years at the School. The unveiling coincided with Evans presenting his Carey Medal to the children of the Junior School, providing an opportunity to celebrate his significant contribution to Carey and to connect students with the School's history and heritage. The portrait is displayed in the L.H. Evans Library.
