Dunshea Oval
The naming of the Bulleen Sports Complex ovals was formally considered at the School Council meeting on 12 June 1975.
Council records note that the main oval was named Dunshea Oval in recognition of Eric Dunshea’s vision and initiative, which directly led to the purchase of the Bulleen property. A supporting note in the same minutes confirms that this was a deliberate recommendation, emphasising that the acquisition of Bulleen “was the direct result of Eric Dunshea’s vision and initiative.”
The sub-committee also recommended additional names to honour other families and individuals closely associated with the school:
-
Pavilion – Gadsden Pavilion (in recognition of the Gadsden family’s significant financial support in launching Bulleen)
-
No. 2 Oval – Gramlick Oval
-
No. 3 Oval – Spicer Oval
-
No. 4 Oval – Rees Oval
-
Hockey and athletic tracks – Wilcox Fields
-
Hockey/Athletic Stand – Jenkins Stand
-
School Oval, Barkers Road – Sandell Oval
Council resolved to adopt these names, subject to agreement from the families concerned.
Thus, Dunshea Oval was named in 1975 to honour Eric Dunshea, whose foresight and leadership made the Bulleen Sports Complex a reality.
