Interview with Eric Stevens, 1983
Eric Stevens recalls his experiences as one of Carey’s 68 Foundation Scholars in 1923. He describes the school’s modest beginnings, small classes and inspiring staff, including Headmaster H. G. Steele - remembered as strict but fair. Stevens recounts the first day’s roll call, early sporting triumphs and his role in founding the “Carey Harriers” running club.
After leaving school at sixteen, Stevens remained deeply involved in the Carey community, becoming a leading figure in the Old Carey Grammarians Association (OCGA). He served as Editor of the Carey Chronicle OCGA section, President (1951–52 and again in the 1960s), and a long-time member of School Council. Stevens recalls initiatives such as the Memorial Provident Fund for the children of Old Boys lost in WWII and efforts to increase alumni membership.
His reflections capture the pioneering spirit of Carey’s early students and the enduring loyalty that shaped the OCGA’s growth.
