Eric Marshall Stevens (OCG 1924)
Eric Stevens was born on 7 September 1908 and attended Carey as a Foundation Scholar in 1923 and 1924. His lifelong commitment to the Carey community was exceptional, marked by decades of dedicated service to the Old Carey Grammarians Association (OCGA).
Among his many contributions were:
-
The formation of the Carey Harriers, a group established to train the School’s Athletics Team;
-
Serving as Editor of the Old Carey Grammarian from 1949 to May 1984;
-
Acting as Membership Secretary from 1974 to 1984;
-
Assisting in the creation of the Memorial Provident Fund, which supported the education of five children of Old Carey Grammarians who lost their lives during the Second World War;
-
Helping to establish both the OCGA Scholarship Fund and the system of automatic Life Membership;
-
Serving as President of the OCGA Council in 1951–1952 and again in 1974–1975;
-
Representing the OCGA on the School Council for a total of seventeen years across two terms (1953–1963 and 1974–1981).
In a voluntary capacity, Eric devoted two afternoons each week to establishing and maintaining the OCGA’s records, and he worked tirelessly to expand its membership. By 1985, largely through his efforts, the OCGA office had become an established part of the School.
In recognition of his remarkable service, Eric Stevens was elected the OCGA Council’s first Life Member in 1984, and later the Association’s first Honoured Life Member for outstanding service to the School.
Eric Stevens passed away on 29 March 1987.
