Harold Ernest Ball
Leading Aircraftman Harold Ernest Ball was killed in an aircraft accident on 4 October 1943. The only son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Ball of Edgevale Road, Kew, Harold attended Carey in 1928 in the Intermediate Certificate Form.
After leaving school, he joined his father’s wholesale business, where he worked as a manager. A keen golfer and tennis player, he was also a member of the “Blue River Boys,” participating in numerous charitable and social engagements.
Harold enlisted in the R.A.A.F. in March 1942. After training as a wireless operator, he was stationed in Western Australia with a fighter squadron before later transferring to a bomber squadron in Victoria.
He was killed when an aircraft on a test flight crashed into the sea. He was laid to rest in the war cemetery at Bairnsdale.
He was 30 years old.
