The H. G. and W. Steele Wing
The HG and W Steele Wing of the School was dedicated and officially opened on Sunday 7 August 1977. It was named in honour of the Carey’s first Headmaster and his wife Mrs Winnie Steele, who was a very active supporter of the School in its early years. It was located between Raymond Hall on Wrixon Street and the Memorial Great Hall on Barkers Rd.
The opening address was given by Mr Ken Lyall, Principal of Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar. Mr Lyall had attended Carey and was Headmaster of Carey Junior School from 1959-1972. He knew the Steele family well and maintained close contact with them while Mr and Mrs Steele were alive. Mr Ken Lyall paid tribute to the leadership shown by Headmaster Harold George Steele.
The HG and W Steele Wing provided Junior School with Science and Library rooms and nine classrooms for forms four, five, six, and seven. There was also accommodation for the Junior School Headmaster, Mr Greg Miles, Administration staff and a change room and toilets.
Over 600 people attended the opening of the event and were enthusiastic in their approval that ‘at last the long-awaited additional facilities for Junior School were a reality’. The School had grown in enrolments from the HG Steele era in 1923 of 68 boys to 1219 boys in 1977. It was a modern building for the times and the growing enrolment.
Historical notesOn Sunday 7 August 1977, "The H. G. and W. Steele Wing" was opened in the Junior School by Mrs. E. B. Gilbert, a niece of Mr. Steele, the first Headmaster of Carey, who died in 1967. Mr. Ken Lyall, Guest Speaker at the opening, gave a fascinating and informative address about Mr. Steele and about Carey in the 1940s - an address which he later repeated at a Senior School Assembly.
The new wing met a long felt need in the Junior School by providing teaching areas, staff rooms and changing room facilities. The older section of the Junior School was also redesigned to include a library, a science laboratory and an administration area.
The donors to the Advance Carey Appeal of 1974 made a significant contribution toward the cost of this development.
