School bell, 1928
The Carey Chronicle of August 1928 states in the section devoted to the Old Grammarians' Association:
In accordance with the resolution of the 1928 Annual Meeting, the erection of the bell at the cost of about 25 pounds will seen be undertaken by the Committee. But before the happy event, an appeal will be made for the necessary funds, and so you are respectfully advised to begin to save up.
At the 6th Annual Speech night ("crowded to the doors" it is recorded) held in the Hawthorn Town Hall on 18 December 1928, Mr. K. P. Rees, Vice-President of the Old Carey Grammarians' Association presented the School with a fine bell, the gift of the Old Boys.
The May 1929 Chronicle reported:
That somewhat austere atmosphere of Speech Night was relieved by the herculean effort of two stalwart Old Boys, who staggered on to the platform with the bell we presented to the School, and placed it carefully amongst the legs of the Chairman and his satellites. With praiseworthy opportunity "Rex" (Kingsley Rees) coaxed it to tinkle two feeble tonks, and that was that.
The bell was carried on to the stage by Kingsley Rees and Howard Jenkin, the Hon. Secretary, hung on a length of electrical conduit which bent in the middle as they advanced.
It was hung from a gantry protruding from the loft of the former stables. Its use was discontinued in 1955 when the new gymnasium was constructed. An electrical system was then installed.
The bell was cast by John Danks & Son, Melbourne in 1928. Its statistics are:
Material: Genuine bell metal
Height: 13.75 inches
Diameter: 18.00 inches
Waist: 9.00 inches
Weight: 123 pounds (55kg)
Tone: 'A' sharp
